Background of the Study
Start-ups play a vital role in driving economic growth, fostering innovation, and creating employment opportunities (OECD, 2024). However, access to financing remains a significant challenge for many entrepreneurs, particularly in developing economies like Nigeria. Traditional financing methods such as bank loans are often inaccessible due to stringent collateral requirements and high-interest rates (Olowe & Akande, 2023).

Crowdfunding platforms have emerged as an alternative financing mechanism, allowing entrepreneurs to raise funds directly from the public through online platforms. These platforms provide opportunities for resource-constrained start-ups to access capital while simultaneously validating their ideas in the market (Agbaje et al., 2025). Despite the potential of crowdfunding, its adoption and impact on start-up financing in Katsina State remain underexplored, necessitating further investigation.

This study examines the role of crowdfunding platforms in enhancing start-up financing in Katsina State, highlighting their challenges, opportunities, and overall effectiveness in addressing funding gaps for entrepreneurs.

Statement of the Problem
Entrepreneurs in Katsina State face significant barriers to securing start-up financing. Traditional financial institutions often perceive start-ups as high-risk ventures, leading to limited loan approvals and restrictive terms. Crowdfunding platforms have been proposed as a viable solution, yet their adoption remains low due to limited awareness, technological challenges, and trust issues (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2023).

Moreover, there is insufficient research on the effectiveness of crowdfunding in providing sustainable financing for start-ups in the region. Addressing these gaps is essential for understanding how crowdfunding can be leveraged to support entrepreneurial growth in Katsina State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the level of awareness and adoption of crowdfunding platforms among entrepreneurs in Katsina State.

  2. To analyze the impact of crowdfunding platforms on start-up financing in Katsina State.

  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities associated with using crowdfunding platforms in the region.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of awareness and adoption of crowdfunding platforms among entrepreneurs in Katsina State?

  2. How do crowdfunding platforms impact start-up financing in Katsina State?

  3. What are the challenges and opportunities of using crowdfunding platforms in Katsina State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Awareness of crowdfunding platforms among entrepreneurs in Katsina State is not significantly high.

  2. Crowdfunding platforms do not significantly impact start-up financing in Katsina State.

  3. Challenges associated with crowdfunding platforms outweigh the opportunities in Katsina State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on entrepreneurs in Katsina State, examining their awareness, use, and perceptions of crowdfunding platforms. The research is limited by factors such as technological accessibility, data availability, and entrepreneurs’ willingness to participate.
